You can really assume the florists types are always the more tender types - bred for ease in forcing bloom to coincide with a particular holiday/date, low compact foliage. I don't have an exact name for yours.

You have to keep in mind that these aren't grown with long term health in mind, but rather for a more brief floral display as most of the plants will be enjoyed as per long-lived bouquets and then discarded. They've been under a regime of artificial lighting, fertilizers, growth hormones to bring them to bloom while small - which they may or may not recover from.

I've seen them go either way in my 8b, either winter damaged or happily settled into an outdoor environment. You could try planting and see how it does, or plant into a larger container and then move that someplace unheated but protected during your coldest winter weeks. (initially it will need to be gradually acclimated to being outside, much like you would harden off a tender annual).

Thanks very much, Morz8. That's lots of good information. It might not have gotten the babying it'll need otherwise. Or them. There are actually 2 plants in that can. I'd better let my son and DIL plant them this fall in their new shady back yard nearly a zone farther south. It already has 5 azaleas in 5 different bright colors growing in a scattered toss-the-bulbs-and-plant-where-they-land style. :)

I was a florist for over twenty years and never did I see any potted Azaleas that weren't the tender hybrids usually Southern Indicas or similar. They are produced to provide a long lasting potted plant and not for gardens. I'd think you'd have a better chance than most at getting them to thrive outdoors due to your warmth in spring and summer.
