Azalea & Rhododendron

Azalea disease

I have quite a few azaleas and they have been showing white spots (lentil size) on the stems (not on the leaves). Stem are than covered by a black powder. It started from two plants and has now spread to about ten, some more severely than others (the newly "contaminated" ones do not present the black powder, yet). Any suggestion for the cause and treatment?
