Wound/hole collecting rain water

Hi all, I inherited 2 old rhodies and i just noticed this past weekend that one of the rhodies has a hole in the main trunk as if there was a branch there at one point and someone ripped it off leaving a hole which has been getting bigger by rot possibly. The shrub looks healthy otherwise, I mean it needs a pruning badly but it is currently blooming and leaves look other wise healthy to me. I can try to take a pic this weekend. I'm not sure if i should drill a small drain hole or should I somehow really saw off a large chunk to get rid of the hole. Would anyone be able to help at all or is a pic really required to even comment?

Thanks for any suggestions.
