large azelea transplant help

Hi,

We have a row of probably 8-10 large approx. 5'x5' azeleas that have just finished blooming at the top of a retaining wall that is getting ready to be demo'd and re-done. The new wall will not have a planting area, so I am trying to find another area I can use as many as possible in my yard. The problem I have is that we are surrounded by woods and lots of roots, so it is nearly impossible to dig more than 12" deep. There is one area along the woods/perimeter that I was wondering if we could just plop them on top of the ground and then create a berm around the root balls and pack that down on top of the existing leaves/etc. and top dress with mulch? this is the only thing I can remotely think of doing to keep them. Basically creating a berm and them on top? THoughts/ideas/tips would be greatly appreciated. They are probably about 20 years old.
