Self Cleaning PJM?

We've had a lot of rain the last week in Minnesota. Just the week before, my rhododendrons (partially wrecked by rabbits this winter) had wonderful blooms! I don't know if its coincidence with the normal life span of the flowers or if the deluge of rain washed off the blooms, but today, most of the flowers are on the ground.

Is this normal 'self cleaning' where they drop the flowers automatically? Or was it the rain? They all seemed to be in their prime-vibrant and healthy- with no wilting, etc. Attached is a picture of what's left. I wish I knew my plant's anatomy.... bear with me! (Any anatomy identification is appreciated!) There are what look to be new leaf buds, but then there are the antennae-y looking parts of the flower where the petal portion just slipped over/off. Should I leave them or pinch them (without nipping the new bus)?
