How to encourage pitiful azaleas to grow to potential size?

I purchased numerous 1 gallon azaleas (Del. Valley Whites, Conversation Piece, & a few unknown varieties.) These azaleas are under a foot tall and were purchased for $2.50 a piece at a local discount store. How can I make these less than prime plants grow to their full potential? I want to place these at the forest line with part sun, at my church.

If you want peak performance, put a little work into the soil.

They like rich soil, lots of organic matter, good drainage, a nice acidic ph in the 4.5 to 5.5 range. Your lighting sounds good. Space them widely enough to allow for their full adult size.
