They really don't need attention other than water during dry periods, a mulch of some type of organic material to conserve moisture and cool roots....if planted correctly in the appropriate site.

Your hours of light sound fine - if your soil ph is below neutral (they prefer acid rather than alkaline) and reasonably high in organic content for nutrition and good drainage, if you are careful to plant no deeper than they were growing in the nursery container and loosen the rootball when installing...you may never need to do more than water, maintain mulch, lightly prune that occasional wayward stem.

It depends on the variety. Some azaleas reach for the stars and grow quite gangly. Others have nice compact shape and are essentially carefree. As Morz8 said, mulching is important and making sure the roots don't get too wet or too dry is important. Planting in well drained areas or in raised beds will insure they don't get too wet. Here in the mid atlantic we seldom have dry spells so we seldom have to water.
