Any chance you have a photo of the damage - right off hand I can't think of a chewing insect that also leaves eggs or larvae on leaf undersides.

Weevils will chew distinct notches in leaf edges, and climbing cutworms will ingest almost entire leaf sides, often clear to the midvein.

Lace bug, white fly, thrips, scale will leave evidence on leaf undersides, but they are all sucking insects, not chewers and you would notice their damage first as an 'off' color to leaves, not missing leaf pieces.

well.... it might be feces that it leaves behind... there were black things under the leaf, and they wash off, so they could have been something else. but they definently were chewed on

On the chance it's weevils or climbing cutworms, why don't you go out with a flashlight after dark and take a look. You may have to make more than one trip, but both of those night feeders should be present at some point not long after dark. Let us know...
