pruning old azaleas

I have 30-40 year old azaleas that used to have boxwoods nestled up against them until the snows of 2010 destroyed the boxwoods. Now the azaleas appear very leggy and we want to do some drastic pruning. I have heard that we should EITHER cut 1/2 off the top all the way around (which would still leave them leggy at the base) or cut 1/3 of the branches close to the ground (which would leave them too tall where we didn't prune) - is it possible to do a combination of the two - cut enough off the top to get the height more reasonable as well as cut 1/3 to the ground to make them fuller at the base? I don't think rejuvenation pruning with the entire bush cut close to the ground is an option for us.
