They can take 6-8 hours of full sun in the morning, but afternoon sun (after 1-2 pm) in middle Georgia would be very hard on them. I know you have another post (on shrubs) about planting them in containers, that would just make the situation even harder for them.

Look into something like Abelia - the 'Rose Creek' cultivar might be a good choice. Another idea might be a dwarf crape myrtle like the Razzle Dazzle series. They are shrub size.

In Oklahoma they are growing some disease resistant varieties in full sun. One of the best is Peppermint Twist.
