Strange powdery mass

Just tonight I noticed a strange, grey powdery clump on one of my azaleas. It was on the main trunk near the ground, and extended into some of the adjoining branches. It crumbled when I hit it with a stick, and the inside was a darker brown/black color. I didn't see any bugs or anything in it. This azalea is a little over a year old, and although it bloomed well, does not appear to have much in the way of leaves now. There are two others right next to it, and they seem to be doing better. I have no idea what the mass might have been, and have been unable to find anything on the net. I wish I had taken a picture of it now. Can anyone help? Thanks!
