The only reason to pollinate the azaleas is to produce seed. However, hybrid azaleas, which is what you probably have, do not come true from seed. That is the big difference between a hybrid and a species.

In fact the lack of seed pods will help the plant produce more flower buds for next year. Deadheading is the practice of removing flowers after they bloom and before they produce seed pods to help strengthen a plant.

If you want to produce new plants, you will have to use cuttings. The above Azalea Society of America site has information on rooting cuttings also.
