stupid! dead azalea? can it be saved?

I got a 3 gallon azalea at a good garden shope a few weeks or maybe a month ago but still haven't put it in the ground. Stupid, I know. We had many consecutive days of rain and then a week of hot sunny weather. I kind of forgot about it and I think it may have died. Many of the leaves are falling off of it and branches look brittle.

If I cut it back and plant it can it recover as long as the root system hasn't died too? If so, how far do I cut back and when? What can I do to the soil to help it along. If it's gone, then lesson learned and I don't want to go the bother of planting it. It's going in an island bed so I'd have to remove mulch and dig the good sized hole to do it. If there is a chance of survival, I'll do whatever it takes.

Thanks for your help. I'm not sure the name of the azalea. I'm in my jammies and don't think the neighbors need to see that first thing in the a.m. LOL

I will post it later if that helps.

Thanks for your help!

Chris
