Azalea Winter Sowing Help

I have read all of the info on Azaleas from seed...But...When should I begin the sowing in order to plant outdoors and survive our Michigan winters.....container plant to bring in or mulch and cover?....No blooms for 2 - 4 years.....Did I read that right?...Thanks in advance!
