In Colorado's high pH soils may making growing azaleas in the native soil impossible. The alternative is to use a raised bed with a good acidic soil well-drained soil. Azalea roots are fairly shallow so that the raised bed will keep the roots from the alkaline native soil. Most articles about azaleas in Colorado are about Mother's day plants that are house plants.

Thanks for the referrals. Yes, I have a raised planting bed for these. It is currently stuffed with compost to about 1.5'. It is also somewhat of a microclimate since it is an enclosed courtyard. I've planted a japanese maple, ilex crenata Sky Pencil, and wisteria Autumn Falls. I know the rhodos will require the most acid, but the others should be fine with it also. I'm planning to add peat in the area I will plant the rhodos. Let me know if that is not the best way! Thanks! --Kris
