PJM in Winnipeg soil/clay

Hi,

We're moving into our new house next month & want to plant PJM as a hedge on the westside of a southfacing corner lot, so sun should really be no problem.

Our problem will be the soil, Winnipeg is on the floodplain of the red river on the bottom of the glacial lake agassiz, the "soil" is nothing but clay & silt sediments.

I haven't done any soil testing so far but by all that I'm reading about soils it should be alkaline & digging after about 1-2ft there is no carbon in the soil anymore but usually it's just fine grey clay that is hardly porous.

So the question is, how big a hole would you recommend digging & what besides peat moss would you recommend filing in in order for a rhododendron to do well & what do you think in terms of drainage with the clay layer on the bottom?

Thx from a newby, Ben
