Too late to trim azaleas?

I was just wondering if it is too late to trim my azaleas. I have some neglected azaleas (I just bought the house a few months ago) that are leggy to say the least. I'm wanting to trim them back and thin them out. I recently heard that early July is the cutoff for trimming azaleas. Just trying to do my research.
