Varigated Rhododendron

Has anyone seen this type of varigation in Catawba Rhododendron? These were collected from a native population and were growing on a moss covered log.

It looks more like a deficiency causing spotty chlorophyll development. The most common deficiency, especially in rotten wood, is nitrogen. I would try a little HollyTone and see if it improves.
