White mold/mildew/??? at base of azaleas

I planted some azaleas this spring. Looking at the foliage, they seem to be doing OK. However, while weeding under the plants this week, I discovered something yucky and white underneath the plants at the base (not on the leaves). Mold? Mildew? Something else? If a picture would be helpful I can take one and attempt to somehow post it. I need some help figuring out what it is and how to get rid of it.

Was that on the shrub or is this mold from decomposing mulch? It was too hard to tell from the photo. If that is in the mulch then you are ok. Bacterial growth in some mulches tends to do that. It can be downright ugly and disgusting at times (my sister threw her mulch away one time) but nothing to be concerned about. Luis

Hi Luis,

Can't be from decomposing mulch, since I use a recycled-rubber-tire mulch, LOL! So I'm not sure what options that leaves me with. Thanks for the thought though.

I have heard of that mulch but have not seen it used. I suggest you also post the question and photos in the Soil, Compost and Mulch Forum
