Rhodo root problem? Should I did it up?

I received this beautiful Rhododendron Elepidote catawbiense grandiflorium in May. It bloomed well and put out many new shoots. It seemed to be settling in well. However, I notice that recently the side branches are wilting and a lot of leaves are yellowing and dropping.

I've read the other posts and it seems to be a root problem, as the other plants around it do not exhibit symptoms of drought. One other factor: we have a family of raccoons who like to use that back corner as a pissoir.

In any case, is the best treatment to dig it up and to try and loosen up the root ball some more? Has anyone had success with this--it seems so traumatic if the plant is already stressed.
