Preparing The Azalea Bed..

WAYNE_R

What are the secrets to preparing a "Great Azalea Bed?

I live in Indianapolis, In - Zone 5. My bed is located on the East side of my house at the North end. It is aprox. 15 feet by 5 feet.

The site receives great morning sun until around noon. The soil is in terrible condition - no top soil to speak of just standard back fill with rocks that you find in a lot of new homes.

I know that most sites recommend 50% peat moss and 50% good top soil. Others talk about adding sulfur or ferrous sulfate to increase acidity.

I intend to plant hardy Azaleas such as "Lemon Lights", "Narcissiflora" and maybe "Lemon Drop". One or more of these will be used in the back. In front I am planting a "Dwarf Red Hardy - the botanical name means "Mist of the Morning Sun". I would still like to find more dark red and golden yellow hardy azaleas.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
