Memories of a huge Rhodo that thrived in 7b, what was it?

There was a big rhodo', memory says over 10' tall and very full sitting right in the middle of a yard in Grayson GA. It saw alot of sunlight but seemed to thrive, it dominated the house.

It's gone now to make room for development.

Does anyone have any ideas what variety this could have been?

Some suggestions of native azaleas: Rhododendron alabamense (Alabama Azalea), Rhododendron arborescens (Smooth Azalea), Rhododendron canescens (Piedmont Azalea)

Not enough information, you don't even say what color the flowers were.

    It had white flowers

Thank you luis for the possibilities, I don't think it's any of those, at least not from googling them. It's tricky to research by google because most Rhodo' pics are closeups of flowers.

I am a genuine clueless newbie here and am now wondering if the mystery plant is even a Rhododendron at all or possibly a Magnolia instead.

Some of the guesses above are actually deciduous azaleas.

I'm guessing a rhododendron maximum. This plant was more popular than it is nowadays. Its hard to find in a nursery these days.
    R. maximum is native, is the largest rhodo, has white flowers, leaves similar to a magnolia.
