Is this an Azalea?

I moved into a new home this past autumn and back in the spring I had to replant a small shrub (about 3 feet high x 3 feet wide) to the backyard. It was fairly overgrown/dead, so before moving it, I pruned it back pretty hard to remove all the dead branches, etc. It is doing really well so far but has not bloomed at all so far this year. At first, I thought that it was a type of azalea since I live in northern New Jersey and they are fairly common plantings around here. I don't really know much about Azaleas and after looking at photos of various leaves, I am now not so sure that is what it is. Here are a few photos of the foliage taken a few months ago although it is a darker green now. Does anyone recognize this by any chance? Thanks!

I'm no expert, but my guess is that you have a mountain laurel which is a native and has lovely flowers in the spring. You may have cut the buds when you trimmed it back, so just wait for next year! It likes shade and a well-drained spot. Lucky you! Of course, it may also be a pieris japonica (andromeda japonica) which is also lovely in the spring. Cynthia

Thanks Cynthia... it does look a lot like the pieris japonica and I've even noticed a few "bumpy threads" hanging from some of the leaf clusters that look similar to what a spent flower on that shrub would probably look. I guess I will just have to wait and see! - Brett
