Rhody root rot -- fix

Planted a group of rhody's and schip laurels. One of the rhody's was in poor drainage location, and an accumulation of water resulted in root rot (in about 10 days!). I've pulled the plant, enlarged the hole and added 12" of river rock to improve drainage below the plant. I've also increased the sand in the soil/peat mix.

Two questions:

1. The rhody is a goner, but I want to use the hole again for a replacement. Any way to prep the hole to reduce the chance that the fungus will attack the replacement?

2. Will the rot attack the schip laurels or other rohdys (they're about 3 feet apart)?

Thanks!
