Spicy Lights Azalea.

Spicy Lights is a selection from hybrids having Rhododendron prinophyllum in their background. The flower has a salmon color with a slight fragrance. Flower bud hardiness is rated at -35 degrees F. Plant height is about six feet and spread is about eight feet.

I know from Fred Galle's book on azaleas that most of the Northern lights series is not seed fertile (but I was trying and had no seed production before I read that). Has anyone tried to see if they are pollen fertile?

Calendulaceum and canadense are tetraploid while most azaleas are diploid. If you cross a tetraploid and a diploid you usually get a triploid which is sterile. There are exceptions to this and many hyrbids of calendulaceum are among the exceptions.

The northern lights series are hybrids of:

(atlanticum x unknown) x red Exbury azalea - Golden L.
calendulaceum x Orangeade - Mandarin L.
atlanticum hybrid x unknown Exbury hybrid - Northern L.
canadense x Kosterianum - Orchid L.
Kosterianum x prinophyllum - Pink L.
prinophyllum x Kosterianum - Rosy L.
prinophyllum x unknown - Spicy L.
unknown x unknown - White L.

Since these are widely different crosses, I would doubt that any blanket statement about their fertility is meaningful.

That is some very good information to know. Thank you for it. According to Galle's book: golden lights, orchid lights, rosy lights, spicy lights, and white lights are sterile.
