Is my rhododendron root bound? Help!

My friend planted my new rhodi so I didn't get a good look at the root ball at the time. That was around a month ago. Since it was planted in an area with a lot of sun, I just assumed that it wasn't happy there. (It seemed to dry out very fast) So today I found another shadier spot for it and dug it up. I was very surprised to see the roots were packed very tightly within the planting mulch. Not a root had moved. The ball still had the shape of the pot and seemed very dry even though we have had a lot of rain. I tried to loosen the roots but I had to really tug on the dirt and I ended up tearing the pieces off. Now I don't know if this is the way it should be or if I should continue trying to loosen the roots. Can someone let me know what to do?
