It would be helpful if they would actually dig and not rip it out...maybe you could beat them to it.

If you take on this neglected plant, you're going to need to be prepared to mulch, water faithfully until Fall rains begin (this isn't an ideal time to dig them up), possibly even provide some temporary shade until it can settle in a little.

As for pruning - you need to remove (sharp pruners) anything obviously dead or winter damaged. Best if you could cut back to existing leaves (immediately above them), but if you have live branches and must cut below existing leaves, you can go back later and remove any stubs down to leaves. Other than that, I can only suggest you are careful not to replant any deeper than it was originally growing - if you amend the soil in its new site, plant a little high to allow for settling. And cross your fingers.
