Growing rhodies in the South

My rural property in SC is probably nearing the southern limit for rhodies. A friend in the area said it was probably too hot, but then we found a large native stand in his woods! How can I tell which varieties are best for our conditions? What about planting- should they be kept in the dense woods, or is a little sun OK? Are there sources for natives as opposed to cultivars? We do have a number of mountain laurel, which I've always casually associated w/ rhododendron. Do they like the same conditions?
