They do like the same conditions as Kalmia - Mt. Laurel.

Certainly something with Rhododendron catawbiense in it's parentage would be appropriate. I am growing several of those and some Rhododendron maximum in a suburb just north of Atlanta. I planted mine on raised mounds where they get about 4-5 hours of sun but are protected from the afternoon sun. A guy about a mile down the road planted his in complete sun (they are never in shade) next to his driveway. He must water them a fair amount! But they bloom like crazy, a nice medium purple. He's had them for about 3 years now and they've grown a lot.
