Black Fungus

My azalea leaves are turning brown and getting rather fragile. I have noticed the back of the leaves have black on them and was wondering if this is a fungus. I scraped all of the mulch out from beneath them, fertilized them with 10-10-10 and replaced the mulch with rubber mulch made from tires. I also watered them completely and applied Sevin thoroughly. Will this bring my azaleas back to health???

I am wondering why you removed the organic mulch from underneath your azaleas. And also why you fertilized them. I guess I'm also wondering why you applied Sevin without knowing what kind of problem you might be dealing with.

Would it be possible for you to link us up with some images of your plants? The black on the back of the leaves 'might' indicate azalea lacebug, but would hesitate to guess without pictures.

I have heard from other sources that certain kinds of mulch result in fungus. Also, I received a gardening newsletter last week and it stated to fertilize now for spring. Thank you for caring and I can get you a picture tonight when I get home.
