Cannas killing off azaleas???

| My SIL's FIL has many beautiful different kinds of cannas and sent her some tubers. She's grown them for a few years in front of her house alongside azaleas and hollies. Three years ago, the azalea beside the cannas died. She replaced it. The replacement died. She dug the cannas and replaced the azalea and now the azalea is happy sans cannas. Has anyone heard of this happening? What could be the cause? |

| Azaleas have very shallow root systems and don't compete well with any other plants. They are usually well mulched to avoid any competition and the need for cultivation. |
