Scintillations

I have planted half a dozen scintillations in two areas of the garden - so they are in landscapers "threes" - however they are not doing well and I suspect they are a kind of rhody which does NOT repond well to a lot of sun. Right now they are getting 6 hrs of sun including mid-day and I suspect that while a roseum would lap that up the scintillations should be moved to shadier spots. Trouble is moving them in August aint a great idea. I am putting golf umbrellas over them at noon - the garden looks like the US Open.

I agree with all your comments. There are actually several different Scintillations in the trade. They are all very similar and probably from the same seed lot. Some people can tell them apart. I don't know if one form is more sun tolerant than the others. I have 2 plants. One is more sun tolerant, but that may be because it is in moister soil. Mine get over 6 hours of sun. One burns nearly every year, some years worse than others. This year it looks good. Perhaps we had more moisture in the soil. They always bloom well.

That makes sense that there are several. I was working at a customers house who has several different rhododendron and he had one i liked, he said it was Scintillation. It was 8-9ft tall, the leaves were 6-8"long kinda wide oval shaped and dark glossy green. very tropical looking I really like it. Many places online say scintillation only gets to 4' tall and wide, this was twice that. I would like to get a scintillation like that or another rhodo with the same kind of leaves. I live in central CT the location is on the south side but under trees so it gets almost no direct sunlight. Any recommendations on where i can get a large one?
