Azalea dry roots

My daughter gave me an azalea with braided stems for Mother's day. I put it in a new pot outdoors and the weather got very hot. The leaves dried out and died on the sunny side but the other side looks savable.... that is if I can get some water into the root ball. When I planted it, I loosened the root ball and put it in potting soil with lots of vermiculite in it. Today I pulled it out of the soil and found the root ball intact, but very dried out. It looks as if the water just went around the root ball. I put it in water and it floated. One side seems to be absorbing some water now, but I wondered if there us some way to get more water to the roots? I was wondering if a drop of two of dish washing soap (not detergent)in the water might help make the soil wettable? Any ideas? I'm soaking it now, but have read here that it shouldn't become saturated. Thanks
