Purpureum

I am trying to find out how to prevent a Purpureum Elegans Rhododendron from getting further deteriorated. I planted last year (spring 2007). I selected a fully branched plant with multiple huge flower buds and big leaves. Please take a look at the photos below:

Towards the end of fall 2007 and during the winter many branches died. This spring 2008 I noticed the plant flowered very weak, and did not recovered very well. I chose not to fertilize this spring 2008 because I was afraid the plant might get further stressed.

Now is recovering but still looks weak. I remenber the leaves being bigger in 2007 and the flower buds have not developed well this summer. What could have caused so many branches to die. What can I do to promote the plant to bounce back as healthy as possible?

The plant sits in the southwest corner and gets about 6 hrs of sun even during the winter.

I will greatly appreciate advice.

Thanks
