| Don't fertilize. That will just stress them. The main cause of azalea death is too much water and being planted too deep with poor drainage. If the soil was acidic, they were planted in well drained soil a little higher than they were at the nursery, received partial shade, were well mulched, and weren't over watered they should be OK. One nasty killer is not soaking the root ball before planting. If the root ball dries out, it will not accept water. The correct procedure is to open up the root ball with a claw and knife to unwrap or cut any circling roots and if it is dry to soak it before planting. By the way, miracid is the worst azalea fertilizer. Hollytone is much better but only use in the spring and then only use at half the rate on the package if at all. |
