Fireweed, from your description there - "Took these pics today so they may only show fall color change but a month ago the leaves were very yellow and many had very thin - 1/8 to 1/16" dark red margins" - you may have been seeing water stress issues but it's hard to guess without a photo taken before your azalea began to show Fall colors. Were the veins in the leaves distinctly darker green than the leaves? That would have indicated chlorosis.
While I can't be sure given the photo size, it appears you have a somewhat dense groundcover surrounding your azalea, possibly a lamium....? Azaleas have a surface rooting habit - a groundcover planting within the root zone could be inhibiting the uptake of available water and nutrients.
