Late buds on Rhododendron

I have a fairly large (11 to 12 height and diameter) Rhododendron. I don't know the variety, but it a fairly late bloomer - peaked toward mid-June even with the amazing spring we had. Even though it is September 1st I am still working on deadheading this plant. I notice a lot of green, healthy looking buds. What causes this and what should I do with them?

Do nothing, it's normal. If they are fat and blunt tipped, they are the flower buds for next Spring. More narrow and pointy and you are seeing next years growth buds.

Many of next years buds are clearly visible on mature rhododendrons in my garden right now.
