I was at the local greenhouse which is having it's sales right now. There was a rhododendron with small leaves there that I fell in love with. There was no name on it and all they could tell me is that it had a dark rose-pink blossom. Can anyone tell me anything about it? Any different upkeep? susan

RE: rhododendron with small leaves

There are many small leaf rhodos that blooms rose-pink, but most common one is Olga Mezitt.
One of the easiest rhododendron to grow.

RE: rhododendron with small leaves

Olga Mezitt is a very good guess. The small leaved rhododendrons that are sold in Michigan are usually either PJM or it's relatives. They are very hardy, among the most winter hardy rhododendrons. Among the possibilities are:

Landmark: deep fuchsia-pink. Foliage turns bronzy black in winter. Think of it as an "almost red" PJM.

Olga Mezitt: clear, true bright pink. It blooms about two weeks later than PJM, avoiding some danger of late frosts. Displays startling dark red bronze fall foliage.

April Song: bright pink double PJM.

Weston's Aglo: purplish-pink with coppery-red spotting in dorsal throat. Sun tolerant. Open habit.

These are all from Weston Nurseries which is located west of Boston.
