after planting rhododendron 'roseum elgans'the 1st week of sept.-ammended soil-ample moisture-raised bed-morning sun only-there are a few red leaves close to the base of the trunk. ? is this maybe just a little transplant shock?

It's part of the normal growth cycle for the oldest, inner-most leaves of evergreen rhododendrons to turn color (yellow, red, orange) and later drop. Leaf drop usually takes place in early fall following the maturing of the current seasons growth .... As long as it involves foliage at least two to three years old, no need for concern.
