I don't think it's too late.

Fall planting is not a problem in NJ. In fact it is the best time since the plants have time to get established before dry, hot summer weather. Make sure you pick a well drained site. Azaleas can't stand being is wet sites. Another precaution, don't forget to water just as you would if you planted in the spring. Make sure it is watered thoroughly before the ground freezes. Mulch thoroughly after the ground freezes to prevent frost heave. You still may get frost heave if we get freezing and thawing cycles this winter. Watch for that.

The one caveat is that you must do it before the ground freezes.

Much better off in the ground, with a mulch than sitting around in pots. 60% of root elongation occurs in fall, too, so stock purchased in summer or fall and held over in pots until spring may also get badly crowded roots from being left in pots through the fall.
