The most frequent cause of lack of spring bloom is an early frost before the buds have hardened off. In a normal year, Roseum Elegans will be very cold hardy, but in the fall it is susceptible to early frosts if it hasn't hardened off. Fertilizing can delay hardening off.

A second cause of lack of spring bloom is bud blast which is an attack by the fungal diseases Pycnostysanus or Briosia azaleaea. The buds turn brown or black. If it is a Pycnostysanus or Briosia azaleaea infection, the dead bud will be covered with short hair-like structures. If there are no hair-like structures, then it is cold damage. Pycnostysanus is best controlled by sanitation, but may be reduced by spraying buds with fungicide.

A third cause is pruning after late spring. Flower buds form after the spring bloom. If pruned in summer, new buds will be removed. Always prune immediately after spring bloom if you prune at all.

Roseum Elegans normally doesn't fall bloom. Some causes of fall blooming include a dry summer and moist fall and/or warmer climates including a warm fall. For some reason, fall blooming is more common in Georgia according to Dr. Sandra McDonald.
