Can this rhody be saved?

I recently rescued a roseum elegans rhododendron that was completely root bound. I've not had much experience with them, but would like to plant it on the side of my house. I'm in southern Michigan and have a sheltered corner of the house where I also have some azaleas that do well there. As you can see from the pictures, the roots are completely bound up. This is after I've soaked it and used a hose to dislodge much of the dirt, but it's still a very tight mess. I'm hesitant to start hacking away at it, but I'm not sure what to do.

Any advice regarding the root ball and what I should do when replanting?

Thanks so much.
