azalea leaf loss

worthwhile1

I am new to azaleas, but did my research before planting and I think I have provided the proper soil and planting location. I planted 2 white cascades in the spring which were just beginning to bloom. They continued through a profuse bloom and looked great all year. Now that fall has arrived, all the leaves on all the branches have fallen off except at the very top of each branch where I assume the flower buds for next year are. I broke off a small branch to check for health and the wood was nice and green. The plant overall looks healthy, but it is advertised as an evergreen and I don't know if this is normal. I should also add that I didn't know about pinching till a few weeks ago and obviously didn't do it. Can anyone help me?
