I decided to add some flowers along the front walkway. Now mind you, the area is L shaped, 10" wide by 6'long. I removed the dead flowers and started scraping the top soil away to get any weed seeds out and out popped this little guy! I thought that was cool... Well to make a long story short, after I was through there were a total of fourteen siblings who joined him in his new temporay home. FIFTEEN TURTLES in an area no bigger than six or seven shoe boxes. I didn't release them because of the herrons arround our lakes and the turtles are considered an invasive species and are trapped. Since they were so young (about 1 1/2" to 2" across) I took them to a lady in tempe who gives reptiles and other animals a home until she can find them families. She's got a LOT of turtles, a green iguanna, a Bearded Dragon, Imperial scorpion, two ferrets, a cat, dog etc. etc. etc. She trying to find a home for Gypsy, a Golden Lab /Akita mix, 8mnth old puppy with one blue eye. I have a picture if anyone's interested. Anyway is was quite a suprise to find all theses little guy's in my garden.

How cool is that! That's great. Was it a red eared slider or whatever they're called?

Yeah, momma was a red eared slider...hmm..sounds like a country song....Last spring the puppy was going bannnas at the front door and when I looked outside there was whatlooked to me to be a tortoise digging in the flower bed. I didn't see the red ear markings at the time because I guess it was too covered in dirt and I thought it was just digging itself a burrow for the day. I gave it to the neighbor who tried to keep it in his raised garden, but it had other ideas and meandered off. I never thought another thing about it til these little guys started popping out of the ground. It's a good thing I decided to use a trowel instead of a shovel. I was amazed to find fifteen of them in such a small space. They must of been living off the insects in the mulch before trying to find a watery home. I should have stacked them up in a pyramid and taken a piture.

What little cuties they are! I have 5 r.e.s. and we only had 3 lovely little babies this year! My grandson has them and they are very tame.

Glad you were using a trowel!
