Ahhh.... that's what those are - I wasn't sure. I saw some in California last month - the blooms have such a variability that I wasn't sure that the Spiders were the same as the others, except that they, too, did not have any leaves. They are gorgeous!

The lily is against an East facing wall. I have five others that haven't popped up yet. The one in the photo came up towards the end of September. I was surprised that it popped up at the same time they appear in the Southern states. I was expecting late October. This is my first time growing them, so I don't know if they're frost sensitive. Maybe someone else on the board knows. Did you plant yours early in the summer? How are your heliconia doing?

Thanks for remembering my heliconia. It is happy as a clam. It is blooming like crazy. I have it on a drip system with slow release granules. I need to see how it does in winter. If it does well..then it is a keeper. It gave some confidence to try others( i have killed several kahili ginger and white fragrant ginger rhizomes).
I have cooking ginger, indian head gingers on patio with drip system that are thriving well. Need to see if they bloom. I also got cucurma(!) from HD with light purple flowers in the midst of summer. It is under paloverde tree. Thriving well. I just got the white variety as well from HD. Need to see how these guys do in winter.HTH
