| Hey all,
I used to live in the Seattle area, tried bananas and it didn't work out so well, even indoors. Always something goes wrong. Now I live in Phoenix and am going to try again.

Hey Zach- from what I have noticed here, Bananas will grow. There is a house in Scottsdale, along Indian School Rd, between Granite Reef and Hayden, that has a LARGE planting of bananas that clearly have been there for a while (more than a few years). In pots, make absolutely sure they will not dry out- those big leaves transpire a lot of water. They will also need BIG pots- only focus on 'Dwarf Cavendish', as they will stay relatively small. Humidity-wise, consider washing them down when you water them. Good luck and don't fret when the leaves tatter in the wind!

Thanks ww1969 for the good tips. I will keep them in mind. I mispoke in my original message. My patio is SOUTH facing. Zach

Rajapuri is also an excellent banana to buy. Relatively dwarf, more cold and wind resistant. It has been my best performer. Good luck!

a friend gave me a piece of banana root many years ago.i don't know what kindit is. i have sandy soil so water drains quickly. my house faces N.W. the sun and heat does'nt seem to bouther it. it's watered by a bubbler three times a week at 10min its by an avacodo tree , planted from a seed 7 years ago. there both doing fine. i also feed them compost tea.

jardinarowa, I wouldn't bother with trying to raise the outside humidity- that's impossible. Just water like crazy.

Nice banana plants and avocado, yuman! Thanks for posting the pic. jardinarowa, I agree with richsd, just water like crazy and don't let them get too crowded in their pot and you should do great. Keep us posted! Happy gardening all.

I have had bad luck with Cavendish, and Ice Cream, but I have a Goldfinger that is doing great! They need lots of feedings and lots of water, but banana grows great in AZ.
