Hard to say ... Palo Verde has "bean pod" fruits after flowering.

Before you go to "more upright" - are the power lines overhead?

You might like a desert willow - prettier flowers.

Looks like Sweet Acacia??? Tiny leaves and thorns - flowers are golden puffballs that are very fragrant. Its a great wildlife tree and native birds will nest in its protective branches.

I think it might be a Sweet Acacia as it is definitely a thorny thing, with yellow puffballs. I don't particularly remember it being overly fragrant, but I really like the idea of wildlife habitat.
If this will grow to 30 feet tall and wide, I think it is a bit too big for the space.
In terms of upright.....I was thinking of a cactus of some kind.
Any suggestions?

You can prune it up, and thin it out, for a better-looking tree. Then plant things underneath that like a bit of shade.

They very seldom get to 30 feet tall unless they are getting ample water.

I think I'll try as you suggest lazygardens and trim it up. If I still am not happy after that I can always remove at that time.
This plant will not be getting much supplemental water so will need to be able to survive on what mother nature gives it, plus whatever dribbles over from the neighbor who lives there year round.

Yup, it's definitely a sweet acacia. I have several in my last garden here. They're thorny, messy, but the flowers smell great and they're quite fine trees if you keep them trimmed. Let us know what you do with yours and how it works out. Happy gardening!
