Is this a bottle brush tree or the shrub (Callistemon spp)? In either case you should wait until you see new signs of growth before you begin pruning. That way you can see what is truly dead. It may be that nature has pruned your bottle brush for you.

For any other pruning on bottle brush its better to wait until May or June.
