Citrus' root stock @ big box stores

I've read from here in the past to not get any citrus from big box store like HD and Lowes since their citrus are grown on a type of rootstock that isn't good for growing here in AZ.

Does this only apply to if you're planting the citrus in ground? What if I want to plant the citrus in a container?

Im asking this because I'm looking to buy a Calamondin and plant it in a larger container in my backyard. The only nursery I've seen it available at is Baker's but they only have 3gal size ones that are only a foot tall and they're asking for $37 for one :\

Now I'm thinking of searching around HD or Lowes instead for one. I know they'll have them for much cheaper.

yeah no kidding.

I went to Whitfill and the smallest size they got are I think 10gal or maybe 15 gal size and were $100 each

About a month ago on craigslist RSI Growers was selling large Sour Orange Citrus Liners at a reasonable price. They are not listing them for sale there anymore though. You could call and ask if they have any left.

Yeah I still have allot left, I grow all our own rootstock so it's something I usually always have. You were looking for "Buddha Hand of sometimes called Buddha Finger??,, I think I have about 10 or 15 left over from last year..

I don't know enough to say what won't work in AZ, but I highly doubt that there is much variation when it comes to small scale (retail) citrus rootstocks: flying dragon is pretty typical from my understanding. Rootstocks in large scale citrus operations may be more complicated. I would go with the cheaper big box plants, as long as they are good quality and the variety you want. The one year warranty always helps too, especially if there is a problem with the rootstock.
