Reccomendations for some full-shade plants?

Hi there. I'm a first-time homeowner and a relative newcomer when it comes to raising any form of plant, haha. My hubby and I bought a foreclosure that had very little in the way of plantlife left on the property by the time we got to it.

We put in a river rock bed where it looks like there used to be a plant bed, in a small area on the north side of the house. We left adequate room for some shrubs in the bed, but I'm at a loss as to what I should plant there. It gets virtually NO sun, all-year around. Our neighbor's home to the east blocks nearly all of the morning sun to that area. The house itself blocks all midday sun, and our garage blocks the setting sun. I'm pretty sure that the soil is typical of the area - dry and hard. So here's my catch 22: Can I find a good shrub that will thrive in full shade AND desert soil?

I was considering cast iron plant, sago palm, or some sort of aloe/agave. (I also love bird of paradise...but I'm afraid that I'd kill it!)

I'd love to hear advice from you all. :) Thanks for reading!
