Congratulations on not grabbing the pesticide at the first sight of aphids. As you mention, there are a host of predatory and beneficial insects patroling our landscapes and chemical controls will kill the good guys too.

The lacewing larvae are voracious predators of aphids. The larvae look very different from the adults so its important to recognize this form as well. Besides lacewings, lady bug larvae and syrphid fly larvae feast on aphids. In addition, tiny predatory wasps lay their eggs in aphids. The developing baby wasp feeds on the aphid and emerges as an adult leaving behind an 'aphid mummy' or stiff tan 'shell' of the aphid. Try using a magnifiying glass on the under side of leaves where you've seen aphids and you may discover some of the 'mummys'. If so, you'll know that the Tricogramma wasp has been at work for you.

Neat! I've had similiar situations with aphids on everything from oleanders to desert milkweeds (Asclepias subulata) to common but fun annuals and perennials. It's good to hear your garden report as a reminder to give things some time before meddling.
